The inaugural S.O.S.A. Summit united community leaders, educators, law enforcement officials, government representatives, and advocates for a day of collaboration and education. Organized by Mariposa Community Health Center, the Santa Cruz County School Superintendent’s Office, and SEAHEC, the event provided 10 breakout sessions that focused on key topics such as systems, prevention, treatment, and recovery, providing valuable insights into addressing substance abuse at both local and state levels.
Attendees analyzed community-specific data, shared strategies for building resilience, and engaged in discussions aimed at strengthening support networks. The summit also featured powerful testimonials from individuals in recovery, their families, and an energizing drumming session led by Mr. Gustavo Lozano from Borderbeatz, emphasizing the power of unity, empowerment, and working together as a community.

Many attendees praised the summit’s impact, with one participant stating, “The whole summit was amazing. All workshops flowed into the final activity. It all came together beautifully.” Another participant emphasized, “Highlighted the importance of community collaboration and its role in diminishing substance misuse.”
Following the summit, participants completed a survey to provide feedback on their experience, offering valuable input to enhance future gatherings. The event had a positive impact on all participating agencies, fostering stronger connections between local organizations and those from outside the community, paving the way for continued collaboration in the fight against substance abuse.

The S.O.S.A. (Santa Cruz County Overcoming Substance Addiction) Consortium consists of various community organizations working together to reduce stigma and heal the community by making culturally appropriate mental health and substance use disorder services readily available for those seeking to improve their quality of life.
