On April 14-16 2010, students from the SEAHEC Health Career Club at Nogales & Rio Rico High School attended the Arizona HOSA Spring Leadership Conference at the Doubletree Hotel in Tucson. At this event over 1,000 secondary and post secondary students participated health profession skills competitions in areas such as Clinical Nursing, Dental Spelling, Dental Terminology, Medical Math, and many more.
The Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) is a national career and technical student organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Technology Education (HSTE) Division of the Association of Career and Technical Education (ACTE).
This year SEAHEC partnered with HOSA to give an opportunity to the students to compete in a health profession of their choice. Some of the choices students made were EMT, Clinical Nursing, CERT, Medical Math, Pharmacology, Dental Spelling, and Hosa Bowl which is a Medical Jeopardy Game.
First time big winners for Nogales were 2nd place Marco Gallegos in Dental Terminology, 5th place Evelyn Aguirre and Karla Lopez for EMT, for Rio Rico 2nd place Kimberly Reyes and Yaeren Hernandez for CERT, 4th place Anel Altamirano and Anahi Dojaquez for CERT. Students practiced very hard on their skills.
We would like to give thanks for local donors of equipment for these events and for helping students learn their skills: Santa Cruz County Office of Emergency Management, Tubac Fire Department, Rio Rico Fire Department, and Nogales Fire Department.
Students that placed 1st -3rd place will go to National competitions in Orlando Florida on June 22-26. Students will be asking the community for donations to attend this conference. If you would like to sponsor a student or would like more information please call SEAHEC at 520-287-4722.
