SEAHEC Executive Director Gail Emrick and Michal Goforth, Executive Director of Pima Community Access Program (PCAP) visited Washington D. C. in October, 2016 to meet with grantees of the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services (HRSA) Rural Outreach Benefits Counseling Program. SEAHEC was awarded funds in 2015 to lead a coalition of community partners to provide community health worker training and support for agencies to conduct health insurance community outreach and enrollment during the 2015 – 2018 enrollment periods. The eigh member consortium, known as The Consortium for Access to Care in Southern Arizona, Casa Saludable, developed an integrated approach for increasing awareness of available services, benefits counseling for enrollment and education for increasing utilization of primary health care services by enrollees. Our approach is based on Consortium member vast knowledge and experience in designing and adapting services, programs, and activities which build on the resources and resilience of our rural communities while addressing challenges and barriers to health care in southeast Arizona.
